controversy over its long and often violent history. The site of separatist conflict between 1976 and 2005, Aceh, unlike most other provinces in Indonesia, was not able to enjoy for long the period of liberalisation, which occurred during the aftermath of the fall of Suharto’s New Order regime (1965-1998).
