The Curious Case of the Dog in the City: Melbourne's Larry La Trobe

Abstract


A case study is presented on the bronze statue of a dog known as Larry La Trobe in City Square, Melbourne, Victoria from the 1990s through the early 2010s, including in regard to public art in Australia and the theft of the original statue in 1995. The relationship between Australian society and Larry La Trobe, including in regard to the statue's occupying urban public space, is discussed.
